How can politics become more functional in solving citizens' shared problems?
It's no accident that this "political reform" question is the first item on the MAP 150 policy agenda. As the steering team and Citizens League staff developed the agenda, we came to believe that we had to make inroads on resolving Minnesota's political challenges before we could effectively resolve the policy questions that are most important to the state.
But the last thing we want to do is jump to solutions (which the question suggests - what would make politics more useful to citizens?) before we have a handle on the questions or problems.
Here's where you come in: What do you think gets in the way of effective politics? Why don't political processes give citizens the outcomes they deserve? Do you think the way we elect our representatives works well? How about the ways in which our representatives do their work?
